4. Native American Art Project: Reflective Symmetry Picture Book Inspired
Attention Art and Music Teachers!!
This Native American Art project is inspired by the book Still This Love Goes On, by singer-song writer Buffy Sainte-Marie (Cree). It is illustrated by Julia Flett (Cree-Metis). This is a story about the love found in family relationships and traditions. The beautiful illustrations demonstrate changing seasons and how love carries through them.
The art lesson is a stand-alone set activity and can be used without the book. The focus is on using Bilateral Symmetry in art; also called Mirror Symmetry, or Reflective Symmetry.
The art lesson focuses on 4 seasons using trees! This lesson can be modified for various age levels and abilities.
Included is a ready to embellish bilateral tree pattern to print for any age, plus a variety of Zentangle patterns used in the example for older students. The cover of lesson is an example of using oil pastels instead of drawing patterns.
Music teachers can use the book, music/lyrics within it and print the tree design to extend your music lesson!
Collaborate! This lesson is great for an art and music collaboration! You can also Google the book title/author to see and hear Buffy Sainte-Marie sing on You Tube!
