This Native American project-art lesson is inspired by a book from the “Tales of the People” Collection created with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. The Butterfly Dance tells the story of the a young girl who takes part in a traditional dance meant to bring rain to help with crops. Students will learn about the Hopi people and an important tradition that has been practiced for generations. The story inspires an art lesson on symmetry. There are many options to create the butterfly: drawing, painting and collage. My example uses construction papers.
