Looking for a way to incorporate art and writing in your classroom? This Native American unit will take your students through the process of making their own picture book! You will use a Native American authored book for inspiration: Coyote Falls in Love With a Star. This book is published by the Smithsonian and is a modern retelling of a traditional Klamath story. Your students will take the same approach to rewrite a story they are familiar with! The will use the 5W + 1H (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How) approach to rewrite their story! The art elements of Emphasis and Balance will be explored for their illustrations. Included in this lesson:

  • Q & A focus activity
  • Student planners to brainstorm ideas
  • Templates to create rough drafts/mock books
  • Vocabulary handout
  • Links to video definitions for art vocabulary
  • Project rubric
  • National Core Art Standards checklist

**The resource book, Coyote Falls in Love with a Star, is not included.
